Avatar-Teaser-PosterReleased in mid-Dec, Avatar rocked the box-office – becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time worldwide as well as the top 2009 movie. All within a few short weeks.

Yet, is it all that? Or is it just a bunch of hype and fluff?

Knowing that you, the reader, would be asking those questions (hmm…assuming that you haven’t seen it….which is probably a mistake seeing how almost everyone in the country as seen it…well, at least all those with funds) – I decided to check out Avatar and see what deal was.

Hmm….ok….the little brightly colored avatar on my shoulder is tell me to confuse the true reason I went to the movies… I WANTED to – and it was a chance to hang out with my sister-in-law and her boyfriend. There! You happy?  Now I just eliminated my last two readers! Sigh. :?

I will now write my review to all the ones and zeros still out there…way out there….way out there, like me…..way out there…. Continue reading Avatar

Air Purifiers?

The sad thing about having three cats is that the air in the house tends to get a tad dirty.  We do pretty good, seeing how we have nice adult-size lungs.

But we are a bit concerned about Jadon’s lungs as they are still developing…as such we are thinking about buying an air purifier [...]

Ultimate Things: An Orthodox Christian Perspective On The End Times by Dennis Engleman

bookIn some ways, Ultimate Things by Dennis Engleman is a fitting end to a year of eschatological studies. The book focused on strengthening the church for the upcoming struggles against the kingdom of darkness with several chapters devoted to standing firm.

At the same time, there were some parts of the book that I did not like – mainly the parts where the author gets away from Biblical themes and started speculating about how things will be. For example, Engleman looks at Saint Paul’s words in 2 Thess. 2:3-8 about the ‘one’ who is holding back the antichrist and interprets it as a reference to the Christian Monarchy (ie. as long as there is a Christian king/queen on the throne of the Roman Empire, the antichrist will not be reviled).

Note that for Engleman, the Christian Monarchy starts with St. Constantine in 312 AD and continues to death of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II in 1948. (Moscow is concerned the third “Rome” by the Eastern Orthodox following the destruction of Constantinople, which was the second “Rome”).  This begs the question of what kept the “man of lawlessness” from showing up prior to establishment of the Christian Monarchy in 312 AD?  :? Nursery Photographs

Over the Christmas holiday we had a painting party in which we decorated our nursery wall and furniture (it helps to have an artistic sister-in-law and two fun-loving teenager gals who were willing to come over and “play”!!)  :D

Enjoy the pictures.

Nashville, Feb 2009

Dear Friends & Family,

Wow – it’s hard to believe that 2009 is over already…and that the last time we wrote a letter to all of you was nearly a year and a half ago after our last trip to Paraguay! Sorry we haven’t been better at staying in touch! The time since then has been eventful and life-changing, so we wanted to make sure we got out a holiday note this year to fill you all in.

In our last letter in Sept. 2008, we mentioned that our little church was facing big changes as we and our fellow VLI-grad took on the leadership of the church. Along with our new service time and name, the PRV has been growing by leaps and bounds since then. We’ve seen some turn-over in attendance as is expected when there are leadership changes, but we’ve been excited to see new faces and have been consistently having 30-40 people every Sunday. We still have a good core group from before that have been stepping up in leadership more and more. This summer we finally made the official break from the VB and became our own church entity and just this month we finished jumping through all the hoops and are an official part of the USA Association of Vineyard Churches. Of course through all of this my (E’s) job has gotten bigger with the addition of accounting and more paperwork, but with more people in the church taking on event organization, etc. it hasn’t been too hard to handle.
